The one star is for the delivery ... otherwise they would have only gotten one star. The delivery rocks ... if only the food was worth the money (or any money really). It took over an hour for it to be delivered - and I'm not sure why I'd think it would be quicker than pizza but I did (so that could be my fault) !! The food did arrive hot (as in temperature) but that was the end of the positives. Worst Chinese food I've had in STL. No flavor - just blah blah blah. General Tso's Chicken was really fatty .... the lo mein was like plain noodles with no seasoning or spices or anything. The mongolian beef was the only decent item but still not great. I was really really wanting to like this place -- I love to be lazy and have food brought to me -- and there are so FEW options in STL - but I guess I'll just have to go out in my sleep pants and pick up thai or vietnamese next time!!

I really like this place.Tiffany, who has taken my order everytime, is both knowledgable about the menu and patient (im indesicive). The food tastes great in my opinion. I usually get the moo shu chicken (BOMB) and egg rolls (crispy) or some version of meat and broccoli. Delivery time has been hit and miss BUT when my driver did show up late he was cool enough to not even charge me for the food. I still hooked him up with a tip.

This is the worst food I've ever had. No drinks with our order (although we paid for them). The food was overly greasy. It was not worth the $50 we paid including tip.

Decent, standard cheap American Chinese food. I'd recommend delivery.

Food is ok, but over priced. We had some credit card fraud at this place. The worker name Crystal ran by boyfriend's card and charged 7 for a tip when it was a pick up. It took about a week to clear everythnig up. Not a good sign, we havn't been back!

This place is complete garbage. 1 point for the quick delivery and that's it. I didn't know it was even possible to screw up chicken fried rice, but WOW was I wrong. Bland, clumpy, tasteless mounds of rice with tiny pieces of rubbery chicken. Absolutely no redeeming value. Egg drop soup was bland and runny. We paid almost $30 for 2 order of chicken fried rice, 2 sodas and a side of crab rangoon. Thank god they included 2 "free" egg rolls as it was the only palatable item included. Complete waste of money. Will never eat here again. Not recommended!

Certainly not the best, but they "deliver". Delivery takes at least one full hour or more- beware. Foods need a little help with red sauce, soy sauce, or red pepper flakes for flavor. Fried foods very greasy. Co-workers like more than I do.

Obviously the order didn't go through when attempting to place it online. Even though the email I received had an exact copy of my order. Guess it just never made it to St. Louis Wok. Thankfully, my card hasn't been charged. Can't believe how many times I attempted to call the restaurant and never was able to get through to anyone. The fact that I could order online used to be a bonus.

My first time ordering Chinese for delivery was an absolute success! From the girl who answerd the phone, who was cheerful & polite, to the guy that delivered my order - great employees. When it comes to Moo Shu Chicken I am very picky. There are so many things that I've tasted go wrong with this dish. They nailed it, hands down. Their Crab Rangoons were pretty killer too! I will absolutely be calling them again when I'm craving some yummy Moo Shu!!

Sweet n Sour pork was a little funky and the fried rice was a little burned. There are plenty of better places around. Don't bother.

Ordered delivery, didn't bring my drink with the combination order. The driver didn't have change for a $20, so gave her the whole $20 when my order was only $15. Also orders the hot and sour soup that smelled and tasted spoiled. Don't plan ordering here in the near future.

I have been going to New Wok awhile and my husband and I are usually happy. Today, however, is the last time we will visit New Wok. The service has been getting progressively worse in the last year. I noticed a new sign on their door about refunds and redos, which tells me there could have been a number of complaints lately. I can totally understand why. This last visit, my Husband's chicken was overdone, the beef fried rice was "ok" and possibly overdone, and my Walnut Shrimp was lackluster and missing the walnuts completely. BUT they managed to add a special ingredient: a nice red HAIR!! *sigh* Ordering is difficult most of the time as well. I am sad bc it was better at one point and it's so close to our house. I am going to try elsewhere and I suggest you do the same.

The food quality is okay. Their delivery times are consistently the WORST I have EVER experienced! It wasn't always like this.

  • Andrew N.

St. Louis Wok's prices for their combination plates are cheap ($6-$7) for a dish, side of rice and egg roll/crab rangoon. Unfortunately, none of the food is very good. The crab rangoon tasted like it was only filled with cream cheese, the fried rice didn't have much flavor and the pineapple in the sweet and sour chicken was gross. I wouldn't say I'd go back anytime soon. Pros: cheap Cons: at best, marginal Chinese food

I will say that after two visits, they should probably change the name from New St. Louis Wok to Old St. Louis Wok because the interior still looks like it wasn't been touched since the 70's. However my last visit I enjoyed by food and the service was good so when a Groupon was available I figured I would give it another try. As far as the interior goes Yes, the décor is worn and dated and is still in desperate need or a renovation. On this trip the doors were open and the temperature was rather high inside, it almost made me wonder if the AC was broken. Once seated the friendly waitress took our order, which included two fountain sodas however the soda fountain is still appears to be purely for decoration as it still not working 10 months after my last visit so alas canned soda was served. Anyways I placed my order and hoping to start off with soup and an order of crab rangoon before my meal and much to my surprise the main entrée arrived before my soup or the appetizer. This was a very strange and puzzling experience. The main entrée was good, however my order only had 7 pieces of chicken while my egg drop soup tasted burnt if that's even possible. Overall I have to admit that my second visit to New St. Louis Wok will probably be my last, unless it's for carryout. By no means would this be a place you want to take a date, unless it's the type of date that you just want to get out of and never see the person again.

I've ordered from here many times because they have an online system and they deliver. It's never been excellent, but this last time was the worst. Bland lo mein, equally tasteless fried rice. The curry chicken combo was okay but it came with nasty fried rice and they sent crab Rangoon instead of egg rolls. Too bad I don't eat cream cheese. Basically, this food will be an okay way to give my dog his medicine. Also, their delivery is incredibly slow and they charge a fee for it.

Average-mediocre. There is a nickname for this place that seems is somewhat accurate. It's not the worst, but frequently food quality leaves much to be desired. It might depend on what you order. If you are hammered and need delivery, it's ok, but it's not going to impress a date. Food does not frequently taste like it is prepared fresh. Sometimes the food delivered is worse quality, but others it's ok. Delivery is convenient.

The food is well seasoned and tasty, the portions are nicely sized. the quality is good. Everything was served hot and together. This pick up order for six was ready in 25 minutes. Egg Fo Yung was the best I've had in awhile, had good flavor and not heavy; gravy was not overly salty and not greasy at all. Happy Family was a nice mix of meats and veggies. We'll do carry out again.

I stopped by New St. Louis Wok this afternoon for lunch with my brother and my bf. The boys had a hankering for Chinese food and I figured we'd go to the first place we saw on Grand. The place was empty so we were seated and served rather quickly. Brother and I had the Buddhist Delight with fried rice and crab rangoon and bf had the Happy Family. We all must have been starving because we all pretty much cleared our plates. The food was really good. I don't go out for Chinese (or order in) very often, but I think this will be my go-to place when I want to dine in. The bill for the three of us was $25; not too shabby. I knocked off a star because they allow smoking in half of the restaurant and at one point I got a whiff. Also, I asked for no mushrooms in my meal and they gave me mushrooms. Otherwise, I'd recommend dining in here.

Best Chinese Curry Chicken in STL. I have tried so many different places and they just get it wrong. We have been ordering from them for 5 years now and they have only progressively gotten better and the delivery times have been much more reliable.

So, I think I've only been here a couple of times, and it has been a long time since last visiting, but that is because I don't really eat Chinese food that often. But, when I was adding the business to yelp and looking at the website, I realized you can actually order your food online, which is pretty cool. So, please someone review this that actually really knows about it. I just wanted to give a heads up on the ordering online thing. I do believe that I remember the food as being okay.

Stephanie B and I were feeling lazy last week and both had a hankering for some Chinese food so we ordered from theses guy. As Liz L pointed out you can order on line and the website is pretty easy to navigate. I thought the portions were very generous, we both ended up having lunch the next day off our dinner so that was a bonus in my book. My beef with broccoli was good, egg roll was decent, and the crab Rangoon was tasty. The mixed fried rice was also good. They did include a plethora of sauces but let one out I would have liked to see, hot mustard. Perhaps it's just me, but an egg roll is not an egg roll without some hot mustard. Probably my only real complaint was the time. When I placed my order and they called back to get my credit card number I was told between 45 minutes and an hour. It took just about an hour, maybe slightly less. Had I known that going in I probably would have got motivated and cooked something myself. But now I know, and knowing is half the battle. Or at least a great cartoon character from the 80s once said that.

We're in the middle of one of St Louis' Snopocalypses, and the food was delivered quickly. It was still hot, the delivery guy was gracious about the condition (kinda icy) of my steps, and the food was fairly cheap. I wasn't expecting much in the way of quality, but I have to say I was really pleasantly surprised. It's Americanized Chinese food, and it's pretty good. The beef with snow peas was surprisingly well-seasoned and tender. Nothing was overly salty (shocking) and although I prefer sweet Crab Rangoon, their garlicky version is good. All in all, I will definitely order from them again. As I said, I didn't expect much, considering the previous reviews. But if you understand what you're ordering, and you want delivery, this place is pretty cool.

New St. Louis Wok is one of the few local Chinese places that deliver to our area. Every time (but one), we've ordered, and gotten the food within an house. In addition, they have a website where you can order the food (avoiding possible language barriers), and then they follow up with a call for your credit card number. Food wise, it's the best Chinese delivery we've had here. Nothing too greasy, and everything comes hot...with lots of sauces and fortune cookies. For our rare Chinese cravings, it's the go-to place.

I have mixed emotions when it comes to St. Louis Wok. I love that they deliver. I love that their online ordering system actually works, and works well. The food I have gotten has been good to very good. What I don't like is when I order online the fastest has been 50 minutes, and the slowest almost an hour and a half. If I don't mind doing carry out from any number of other Chinese restaurants near me, it is always, "Your order will be ready in 15 to 20 minutes." So, why so slow? Until they speed up they are only 3 stars.

    (3)
  • Gary T.

With the caveat that you should be prepared to wait about an hour before your order arrives, I give this place top marks. I'm not saying this will blow foodies away - it's asian delivery - but for what it is, you won't find better. Excellent pepper chicken, St. Paul sandwich (pork), steamed pot stickers and crab rangoon. Everything in our order was very good. Definitely worth a try.

Following up on Jaffa's review, I shall give everyone the update. Skip this place altogether, and search for another Chinese spot in South City. We ordered vegetarian delivery food. Sauteed vegetables, and tofu doesn't seem so complicated right? Wrong. It arrived in over an hour's time, soggy and overcooked in it's own watery sauces. There were two pieces of tofu in the dish. We paid extra for rice. The egg-drop soup was a bland concoction. Overall, this place was expensive and not worth a penny of it. I'm still searching for good Chinese in our area....to be continued...

This place has a decent, inexpensive selection of Chinese take out, nothing special but if I am really craving Chinese it satisfies me. The reason it gets 3 stars instead of 4 is mainly how long it takes for delivery. The last 3 times I ordered it took a good 1 1/2 hours minimum to be delivered. I am sure I will order from them again because I am constantly craving Chinese and I can order from them online but not if I am super hungry because then waiting almost 2 hours will just not cut it.

  • River K.

If you like really good fried rice, this is NOT your place; BUT if you like Hot Braised, Orange or General Tso Chicken, then you will enjoy every bite. This is not an exceptional experience but yet a good choice for a quick bite to eat.

  • Eliza B.

So, maybe this should be a 2 star review, but much like pizza, I think it's hard to really screw up Chinese food. Not even real Chinese food, but the American variety. This was the most tasteless concoction of attempted cashew chicken that I've ever tasted in my life, and I'm so incredibly disappointed. I put this place in on speed dial before I even ate here because I was certain it was going to be my new go-to quick dinner. Hells to the no. On a positive note, the food was plentiful and hot. On a negative note, I didn't want to keep eating because it was so bland.

Do I have to give it a star? This was their last chance with me. Each time I've gotten delivery it takes over an hour and they always forget something! Last night took 11/2 hours they sent the wrong entree, the crab Rangoon was ice cold and over cooked, the egg drop soup tasted like egg water. Never ever get delivery!!!! They are always out of things, cashews, fortune cookies, soda, etc. I'm finished with these rude people and their horrible food and service!

Waited over two hours for a delivery order. Called twice to see how long it would be and they said both times that the driver was on his way. I finally just decided to cancel and the manager was very rude and hung up on me. Also the wrong amount was charged to my card.

As Chinese take-out goes, this is a good spot to grab lunch. Their combination plates are decently priced and the portions are large, plus you get a drink. They also offer delivery, which I'm assuming must account for the bulk of their lunch business, because the place has been a ghost town both times I've gone in to pick up food. Last time I went in at 12:30 and there was not a soul in the place. It also takes forever for anybody to come out from the back despite the doorbell that goes off when you walk in the door. It's weird and kind of creepy that there's nobody around. The food itself is pretty decent, but there's no way I could sit in there and eat. It's dark and probably hasn't been updated since they opened way back when. It works to curb my fried rice and crab rangoon cravings every now and then, but that's about it.

Hey, you know what. I'm going to have to give these guys a decent review. I know people have slammed them, but hey, but in some cases I think you need to have your expectations in line with reality. So, I was pleasantly surprised & I thought it was pretty dang good. Wanna know why? Keep reading: The veggie egg rolls were nice and crisp and had a pleasant flavor. The crab rangoons were actually of a decent quality--not those cheapo 'crap' rangoons that have little substance coupled with an unpleasant sweetness. Believe me I know the difference, so when I took the first bite into that cream cheesy goodness, I thought at least it's got *that* going for it. They went from rangoon to ran-'gone'! HAHAHAHA!! The veggie Lo Mein was really nicely done with the smoky wok flavor. Now, in my experience, this is the true test of a decent Chinese place compared with bad one. Another review said something to the effect of "it's hard to screw up Chinese food." Not true!!! The worst plate of Lo Mein I've ever had was in Bentonville Arkansas. Why? Because it had no smoky wok flavor!!! You need the essence of that smoky Chinese grill surface. This is the reason I don't like PF Chang's. The food at PF Changs's has no 'soul'. This Lo Mein was good and contained the essence that I love in good Lo Mein. Nice balanced flavor and the essence of the grill! The veggie fried rice was decent as well--no complaints. It's maybe a tad more expensive that some other Chinese places nearby that deliver, but given the vast improvement in quality, I'm not going to complain at all. So is it as good as it gets?....Well... that's relative. But given that they provided a decent quality crab rangoon, a smoky wok flavor and they deliver in a manner that it was pretty timely and decently warm upon arrival, hey, I feel like sticking up for these guys! I will happily order again.

I've had some extremely bad delivery service from this place, often giving incorrect soups and taking extremely long. I once ordered at 8 pm and didn't receive my order until 1030 which is 30 minutes after they were supposed go be closed. So, I went in for carryout today and ordered there. It took about 45 minutes to get my order and I was the only customer in the empty restaurant. Unfortunately, this place is extremely slow. That's a shame because their food is really great. The crispy chicken is freaking incredible and is ALMOST worth the wait. I'm a patient person so I'll probably endure the wait again at some point, but if you're even slightly impatient, good luck. Don't smell the couch. TLDR: I'd rate the crispy chicken a 5/5, but this place has the slowest service/deliveries ever.

Came home to a flyer on our door. We ordered online, got the email confirmation with order. After 1 hr waiting we called to get an update. Come to find out they are closed on tues. Some how they haven't figured out to INFORM hungry customers online or through online ordering that they are closed tues. Nope not only did they allow us to order they also billed us and sent confirmation email. We haven't even tried eating their and never will. Right now we paid for good we never got. We should have seen their reviews before ordering. Update: the following day (Wed) we get a call from the delivery driver at 12:30... Asking where we are bc he is at our door with the food. WTF is a matter these guys? We laid into them about ordering it the day before and that they need to adjust there ordering system so customers know they are closed. As of today we are fighting them on the bill asking for a refund since it's their mistake and we never revived food. Stay far away!

While we've had okay experiences with this restaurant before, lately we've been having experiences that have been worse and worse. Tonight we ordered our food at 5:00 knowing that it could take 45min or so and now the time is 6:34pm and still no food. My girlfriend called to check the status. At first they didn't answer, so she called again and some guy answered with attitude "Hello?" She asked if this was New Saint Louis Wok and all he said was "Yeah." So, they're taking forever AND then rude about it. Plus, the last time this happened the food was cold as well. It's just getting ridiculous They just lost a customer who ordered from them on a semi-regular basis.

Not the best, not the worst. Better than New China, we'll give this another shot since multiple reviews very based on day it seems

So I'll start of by saying that although you CAN dine in, you do not want to - it's pretty basic and really has no ambiance. What this place is good for is carry out or delivery. The food is always decent, they have great and inexpensive lunch & dinner combos and I love that they have vegetable soup and a number of other veggie options. They also have coupons to use based on the amount of your order and the staff is always friendly.

"Decent" is the best word I can use to describe this Chinese food -- it probably won't become your new go-to Chinese place, but it'll satisfy your cravings for Chinese food if your usual place isn't open. I tried their pork fried rice, the pork egg rolls and the crab rangoon. Despite another reviewer saying that their crab rangoon are not sweet, the ones I received were, though they tasted good and weren't overly sweet. The pork fried rice was also pretty good, although it was slightly lacking in flavor, but it wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed by adding some soy sauce. Though the egg rolls tasted okay, they were COVERED in grease, not to mention that the grease was dark brown -- it almost looked like the egg rolls were coated in some sort of brown sauce. Strangely, the crab rangoon were not greasy at all, so I'm assuming they have multiple fryers and need to change the oil in one of them. Like other commenters said, it did take about an hour and a half for the delivery guy to get here, but I liked that I could order online. All in all, I would probably order from here again, but only if my regular place wasn't open or if I didn't have cash (I usually order from Grand Wok, which is cash only).

Colin F. and I were craving crappy Americanized Chinese food (what? I grew up in the Midwest...), and a friend said this place is just the spot. But this place was beyond terrible. The egg rolls were soggy (my favorite part), our meals were overly salty and bland and the sauce was a little booger-y in consistency. When we picked up our order, the carpet was dirty and matted and there was a very interesting scent... Long story short, yuck.

I just ordered from them this past Saturday night from their online menu. They had to call me b/c they only received part of my order. The delivery took an hour but they had said that it might take that long as I ordered at about 6pm that night.. When the food did arrive I was actually charged about $.50 more than the what the online total indicated. While the entrees were large and hot, the appetizers were ice cold. But that wasn't the worse part of it all. About 3 or 4 hours after dinner, my face and hands started to swell. So much so, that I could barely see out of my puffy eyes. In addition, I started to have stomach cramps, bloating, an extremely dry mouth, horrible headache and insomina. It eventually went away with some allergy meds and plenty of liquid and aspirin. I wasn't sure what to think of it until I started doing some research and believe I may have had an allerigic reaction to what I think was MSG in their food. There is no listing on their menu or online page that says that they don't use MSG so it's possible they do. I have never had this happen before but don't intend on going back to find out if happens again. Just a warning to others who might be allergic.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
